Dinghy Sailing

Venues: Reservoirs to the west of London, sheltered coastal locations such as Chichester and Poole harbours and Calshot in the Solent.  Pending is a new local venue in London Docklands .  Also there is a regular Whitsun weekend visit to Dale in Pembrokeshire.

There is usually a selection of dinghy types available, with something to suit all levels of experience and ambition.

Yacht Cruising

Fizelle - yacht for cruise w/e 26 - 28 May 2001

Typically the yachts vary in size from 30' (9m) up to 48' (14.5m), which provide 6 to 10 berths respectively and will have IVC skippers in board. Occasionally larger classic vessels i.e. converted fishing smacks, thames barges etc, up to say 90' are chartered.  These vessels will have a professional skipper and accommodation for 10 to 14 crew.

The yachts are totally self sufficient for overnight accommodation, food, water, some grog and the necessary facilities.  Washroom facilities onboard are adequate but basic.  However, on most trips we stop in a harbour or marina overnight and showers will usually be available, time permitting that is between visiting local sites of interest, bars and restaurants.

Yacht Racing

IVC members take part in round-the-cans racing, usually within the sheltered Solent. The yachts follow a roughly triangular or rectangular course around marker buoys. The course would be only a few miles in length and designed to test the crew at all points of sailing relative to wind direction. Hence, this form of racing involves loads of sail changes, numerous tacks and constant sail trimming and is an excellent way to improve your sailing expertise.
